On this Memorial Day, we honor those who gave their life in service to our country. But, a web site based in California is trying to honor soldiers every day. They're helping them find a job when their military service is complete. The site is called Hire A Hero, a professional networking site for those transferring out of the military life.

There are a lot of things you have to do in the military but job hunting isn't one of them. So when you get out like Palmer Burckard III did after seven years in the army as an informational analyst, finding that first civilian job was overwhelming. Burckard spent nine months looking for a job as the economy was tanking and unemployment was skyrocketing.

"I sent out quite literally 1200 resumes.I had everything I needed to succeed but the opportunity just wasn't there."

The Department of Defense has a transition assistance program that includes career advice and four job banks. But a 2007 report from the Department of Veterans Affairs found that 18 percent of veterans who sought jobs within one to three years of discharge were unemployed. And 25% got jobs with salaries less than $21,840 a year.

So when a friend told Burckard about a web site called Hire a Hero he was all ears. The professional networking site helps returning service members find jobs as they transition out of the military. Over the past two years, 190,000 veterans have registered with Hire a Hero and 3 in 10 have found jobs from it. In Burckard's case, it only took about a month before he got the call that led to his current job. He's now the lead technician in the DC Mmetro area for root consulting, a full service IT company.
